528 illiterate adults enrol for literacy classes in Kogi

Published by Tribune on Tue, 31 Jul 2012

About 528 illiterate adults have enrolled for various literacy and vocational skills programmes under the Kogi Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education (AANFE) in the 2011/2012 session.Malam Danladi Isyaka, Area Officer for Lokoja Zone, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja at the weekend that the rate of enrolment in the centre was on the decline when compared to previous years. He said that the Lokoja centre usually had more than 1,000 learners per session. He said that enrolment into the various programmes, including the literacy classes, tailoring, knitting, secondary school and computer units for the current session was 528.Isyaka said women constituted the highest percentage of learners at the centre.``Of the total enrolment figure, 362 women registered, while the men were only 166,'' he said, adding that women performed better than their male counterparts. The area officer lamented that facilities at the centre, built and donated to Kogi State Government in 1991 by the European Economic Community (EEC), were deteriorating.``Writing materials, which are usually donated by donor agencies and made available to the centre through the National Commission for Mass Literacy, are no longer regular,'' he said.Isyaka, therefore, appealed to the state and local government councils to come to the aid of the centre.``Government should see the centre as very critical and important because high level of illiteracy is dangerous for the society,' he said. Also speaking, the Principal of the centre's secondary school, Malam Abdulkareen Gwodobe, urged the government to renovate and construct more classrooms for the centre. He said the centre also needed more computers and facilities for Home Economics.
