Landlord docked over missing tenant's property

A 62-year-old landlord, Samuel Ogunsemore, was at the weekend, arraigned at an Ogudu Chief Magistrates' Court, Lagos, over his tenant's missing property, valued at N520,000.The accused, who lives at No 23, Ojanjuni St. , Owode, Orile Mile 12, Lagos, is facing a two-count-charge of unlawful damage and stealing.The prosecutor, Corporal. Kemi Adeniran, said the offence was committed on June 10 at the same address.``The accused, being a landlord of the complainant, Mr Sunday Adenuga, unlawfully broke into his tenant's room without his consent and packed his belongings to an unknown place.``When the tenant came back from Kirikiri Prison where he served a 6-month jail term, he discovered that the door of his room was broken and could not find all his property so he reported the case to the police station.``The landlord was arrested because he was the only one in the house when the offence was committed, '' she alleged.Adeniran told the court that the total value of the property taken from the house was N520, 000.The offence contravened Sections 285 and 304 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, the prosecutor said.The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.The Chief Magistrate, Yetunde Aje-Afunwa, granted the accused bail in the sumof N20, 000, with one surety in like sum.She adjourned the case to Aug 17 for mention.
