Nigeria has rich football talents, says St. Bedes' coach

Published by Guardian on Tue, 31 Jul 2012

AS the curtain fell on the Pepsi U-17 International Tournament last weekend in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the coach of St Bedes Academy, United Kingdom, David Legget, said the competition showed that talents abound in Nigeria.St. Bedes Academy was one of the four teams that participated in the tournament, which was organised by soft drink giant, Pepsi, as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the Pepsi Football Academy (PFA).According to Legget, 'truly, the standard displayed by all the teams is so high. I must also point out that the Nigerian lads impressed me so much. This country has talents that can make the difference in the world.'It will be recalled that Nigeria has been seeking ways to re-establish itself as a giant in youth-based tournaments in the world, being the first country to win the Kodak U-16 World Cup in Japan many years back. However, Legget is hopeful that the lost glory could be regained only if the efforts of PFA and other football academies around the country are appreciated by those in charge of the country's youth teams. After two days of soccer display at the MKO International Stadium, Abeokuta, PFA emerged the best team after beating Riverlane Academy 1-0 in the final. The goal was scored in the last minute of the second half. Oyo Academy came third while St Bedes Academy was fourth.
