Ekiti Sports Festival begins August 19

GOVERNOR Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has approved the organisation of third Ekiti State Sports Festival from August 19 to 25 this year.Chairman of Ekiti State Sports Council, Prince Ade Adetola, who made this known at a press briefing in Ado Ekiti, said the festival was in line with the Eight-Point Agenda of the Fayemi administration. 'Sports development at the grassroots to tap budding talents and nurture them to become great sports men and women who can represent the state at national and international competitions."Adetola also hinted that the festival was aimed at ensuring improved position of the state at the coming National Sports Festival in Lagos, saying the state ranked 20th after the 17th festival held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State last year.The Ekiti Sports Council boss said for the goal of improving the state's four Gold, six Silver and nine Bronze medals in Port Harcourt to be achieved, "the preparation has to start in earnest."He said the one-week event would feature local athletes from the 16 local government areas of the state who would compete for honours in Athletics, Volleyball Table Tennis, Football, Handball, Traditional Sports, Lawn Tennis, Basketball, Badminton, Chess, Judo and Hockey.According to him, "to ensure a hitch-free competition, the Main Organising Committee has been inaugurated as well as other sub-committees such as Technical, Security, Medical, Accreditation, Documentation and Publicity, Venues and Accommodation, Ceremonies and Protocol.
