Ajagunla Day beckons

Published by Tribune on Wed, 01 Aug 2012

Ahead of the Ajagunla Day, an annual event of their calendar, indigenes of Ila Orangun in Osun State, for the love of their roots held a special dinner in Lagos to prepare for the ceremony.Ila Orangun, a rustic town in Osun State, will, on November 3, hold its Ajagunla Day. An annual event, the day is to celebrate its culture with pomp.Towards a successful hosting of the event, Ila-Orangun indigenes in Lagos held a dinner in Osun Hall of Airport Hotel, Lagos.Aimed at raising funds for their N1 billion project (a hall large enough to sit 2000 people comfortably, and renovation of Orangun Palace), the dinner drew people from all walks of life.Though held on a work day, the indigenes, their friends and colleagues came in traditional attires. There was no dress code in particular, but all tried to appear as fashionable and stylish as they could. The decoration of Osun Hall, venue of the event, was simple.Everyone who spoke, first greeted the gathering in the native dialect: Ekun o.They responded: Ooooo. Indeed, all through the event, Yoruba was spoken. The chairman of the Ajagunla Day Committee, Elder Paul Ogunrinade, in an address, stated that the dinner was to mobilise indigenes to celebrate the day in style in November. The three-day event will climax on November 3.Ila-Orangun is a community of about 78,000 people.'This fundraising is to organise funds to ensure that the celebration goes well. Our target is to make the Orangun Palace a standard one. It needs to be rearranged. We have a number of projects to complete, the palace and a town hall.'The governor has promised to ensure that the dream is fulfilled. I am using this medium to call on the people of Ila to come out en masse to make the day a success.'Ogunrinade said it was compulsory for every son and daughter to bring their friends and neighbours home for the celebration. He said many indigenes didn't turn up because they had travelled. There was entertainment by the Elewe crew, who did the lion traditional dance. The National chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Chief Bisi Akande and former Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun, attended the event. Balogun implored the indigenes to cooperate on the good cause. He encouraged the indigenes across the country to be involved in the activities of the town no matter where they are.'I doff my hat for the members of the committee for this laudable project because the activities are to move the town forward,' he said.
