Eagles should expect a cracker against Liberia, says Rufai

Published by Guardian on Wed, 01 Aug 2012

AS Nigeria prepares to play the 2013 AFCON qualifier in September, Super Eagles' former goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, says he expects 'a cracker' against the Liberians. The Super Eagles will play the first leg of the qualifier in Monrovia on September 8 and the return leg a fortnight later in Abuja. Though he stressed that the match would not be easy, Rufai is confident that coach Stephen Keshi has put everything in place to secure the points, as the team is prepared for its West African neighbour.Speaking to the media yesterday, Rufai emphasised that Keshi already has all the right personnel to prosecute the match, adding that the decision to use home-grown talents is positive and beneficial to the development of the sport.Rufai added that he expected an interesting clash on September 8 and that Nigeria had already met the Liberia once in Monrovia, where two goals from Sunday Mba gave the Eagles victory. He noted that the country has learnt from its mistakes and would do better going by the present steps being taken by those at the helm of affairs.'We have learnt from our mistakes and that is the beauty of the game. We have bounced back and will continue to rise,' he said. 'Keshi is also a good coach, no doubt, and he will prove his worth as a professional coach.'Both countries have met 12 times, Nigeria having the upper hand with eight victories and three draws. The first meeting was in 1963 in Monrovia, which ended 2-2. The Super Eagles have lost only once to Liberia, when it fell 1-2 during a 2002 World Cup qualifier in Monrovia.
