Fayemi Weeps, As Slain Corps Member Is Buried

Published by Guardian on Sat, 07 May 2011

Offers Siblings Scholarships WE are not here today to rejoice because there is nothing here to make us happy but to pay last respects to our son whose glory was cut short. With these words, Rev Billy Adewale of Emmanuel Cathedral, Ado Ekiti began the funeral service of 27-year-old Seun Paul Adewunmi, one of the youth corps members who was killed during political mayhem in Bauchi shortly after the result of the presidential election was announced.Adewunmi, a native of Ogotun-Ekiti in Ekiti Southwest Local Government Area of the state, was serving in Giade Local Government Council of Bauchi State before he was hacked to death by irate youths during a violent protest. His body, conveyed in a wooden casket and draped with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) flag, was brought to Ado Ekit yesterday where he was given a state burial. Many dignitaries in the state including Governor Kayode Fayemi, his wife, Bisi and Deputy Governor, Mrs Funmi Olayinka could not fight back tears when Adewunmis  pathetic story was being told by his friends and admirers.Speaking at the solemn but short funeral service held at the Government House,  Fayemi described the gruesome murder of  youth corps members  in the post-election violence in some Northern states of the country as an indication that Nigeria is yet to be a nation.Rev Adewale  who presided over the funeral service, condemned  the statement allegedly credited to the Governor of Bauchi State, Mallam Isa Yaguda that he was nearly killed in Ibadan , Oyo State in 1979 during similar mayhem. In his sermon tagged Christ in me, the hope of glory, he described the outburst as regrettable and unfortunate, saying: If he had died at that time, would he have become the governor of a state today He would have been forgotten just like that and nobody would have done anything. In an emotion-laden tone, Fayemi pledged to name a monument after Adewunmi and  foot the educational bills of his  siblings as a honour to his departed soul.Fayemi whose eyes were soaked with tears, asked rhetorically: What offence did Seun commit Has he committed an offence for answering  a national call by going for serviceSeun even went further by answering the call for youth corps members to conduct a free, fair and credible elections for Nigerians.
