24 die in Nasarawa, Kogi accidents

NO fewer than 16 persons have been confirmed dead in a road mishap on Nasarawa-Toto/Keffi Expressway in Nasarawa State.The unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Keffi, Longzem Livinus Yilzoom, who confirmed the number of casualties on Wednesday, attributed it to reckless driving and overloading.One of the newly employed lecturers of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa and eight students of the institution were said to be on the casualty list.The accident, which involved a station wagon with registration number AR 506 JJN and an Audi 80, with registration number BEN 950 AH, was said to have happened at the weekend, at Dadin Kowa village, around 2.15 p.m.Eyewitnesses told the Nigerian Tribune that the incident occurred when one of the drivers, in the process of overtaking, collided with another oncoming vehicle.Fourteen persons were said to have died instantly, while two others died the following day at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi.In another development, no fewer than eight persons have died, while another eight sustained injuries on Tuesday evening, in an accident at Zariagi, by Kabba junction, on the Lokoja-Abuja highway.According to an eyewitness, the accident involved four vehicles, a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number NEN 120 XA; Toyota Sienna, XJ 902 HTE; Toyota Corrola, XV 125 SUA and DAF truck, XD 287 KWL.The accident, according to the source, happened when one of the vehicles overtook others and collided with an approaching vehicle, while the two other vehicles rammed into them from behind, killing five persons on the spot.Kogi sector commander of the FRSC, Muhammed Garba, confirmed the incident, claiming that five persons died.According to him, 31 people were involved in the accident, adding that five died, eight were injured, while others escaped unhurt.He said the corpses had been deposited at the morgue of the FMC in Kogi, while the injured were receiving medical attention at the same hospital.
