Fuel subsidy scam: Court turns down application of indicted marketer

Published by Tribune on Thu, 02 Aug 2012

JUSTICE Adeniyi Onigbanjo of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, on Wednesday, refused the bail application of one of the arraigned indicted oil marketers, Oluwaseun Ogun-bambo, with an order that he should be remanded in prison custody pending trial, on allegations that he possessed dual identities and had been jumping bail.Ogunbambo, who was on trial alongside Habila Theck and Fargo Energy Limited, on a six-count charge, was asked to be remanded at Ikoyi Prison, pending the commencement of his trial. At the resumed hearing of the matter on Wednesday, defence counsel, Babajide Koku, urged the court to grant bail to the defendant on liberal terms, but the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, opposed the bail on three grounds, one of which was an allegation by Stanbic IBTC Bank that Ogunbambo collected loans to the tune of N230 million and N430 million respectively with forged documents and had since jumped bail.Another ground, he said, had to do with the defendant's arrest at Dublin Airport with cash, which he refused to declare to the authorities.Justice Onigbanjo, therefore, refused the bail, but granted bail to Thech in the sum of N20 million and two sureties each in like sum, while the case was adjourned till September 21.Also, Justice Habeeb Abiru of the same court granted Abdulai Alao bail in the sum of N100 million with two sureties in like sum.The judge, in addition, held that the two sureties must be residents as well as owners of landed property in Lagos.
