Upsurge in crime rate worries Abule Egba residents

Published by Tribune on Thu, 02 Aug 2012

There has been an upsurge in the level of insecurity in Abule Egba axis Ifako/Ijaye Local Government Area of Lagos State in recent times and the development is giving the residents of the area cause for concern. Some community leaders in the area told Community News that incessant incidents of armed robbery were making life difficult for the residents.Community News gathered that the security situation in the area was commpounded by the fact that the community is very close to the ever busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and that armed men often ply the area to avoid confrontation with armed men.Streets usually affected by the activities of the bad boys include Beckley, Arowolo, Akinola and Agbe. Some residents of these streets told Community News that the activities of armed robbers had paralysed social life in the area as people now retire into their homes early.A resident of Arowolo Street, Mrs Rose Akpan, who runs food canteen in the area, told Community News that the poor security situation in the area had forced her to close operation for a while, urging government to do something about the security situation in the area."We are appealing to state police command to beef up security in our area. We now live in fear. Every evening, we hear booming of guns. And everybody will be running helter skelter. I run a canteen and I decided to stop the business because of lapses in the security situation in our area.People now stay in-doors in the evening unlike before when men usually stayed together in my joint to drink, eat and socialise. The situation is killing business."A community leader in Arowolo area of Abule Egba told Community News that the residents contributed money to erect a giant gate to secure the area from the armed men.
