Oyerinde: Police headquarters barricaded over ANEEJ boss's continued detention

Published by Tribune on Fri, 03 Aug 2012

MEMBERS of civil society organisations in Edo State, on Thursday, barricaded the gate of the state police headquarters in Benin City over the continued incarceration of the executive director of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Reverend David Ugolor. The development was purportedly provoked by the alleged refusal of the state police command and the team of detectives from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, investigating the murder of Governor Adams Oshiomhole's principal private secretary, Olaitan Oyerinde, to allow Ugolor's wife, Ngozi, access to the husband. It was gathered that the police refused to allow Mrs Oyerinde to give food to her husband, saying that they would take care of his feeding, an action which was said to have made Ugolor to embark on hunger strike, with the gate barricading protesters drawing attention to the possibility of an alleged plot to poison the activist.Armed detectives had last Friday arrested and detained Ugolor, after they claimed that one of the suspects arrested in connection with the murder of the Oyerinde confessed that one 'David' asked them to assassinate Oyerinde.Civil society organisations in the state had described the claim as spurious and an attempt to frame up Ugolor. The protesters were dispersed after the police shot tear gas into the air. They, however, vowed to continue the protest until Ugolor, who they insisted was being framed up by some persons, was released to his family.
