Lagos: Tabontabon residents want timely completion of canal

Published by Tribune on Fri, 03 Aug 2012

Residents of Tabontabon area of Agege, Lagos State, have called on the state government to ensure that the canal project being constructed in the area is completed on time to put a final stop to the problem of flooding and other environmental challenges facing the community.Community News learnt that residents of the area, after series of appeals to the authority, were excited when the state government began the dredging of the pool in the area. The pool, Community News gathered, has been a source of worry to the residents, as it serves as safe haven to dangerous reptiles. So, it was celebration galore in the area about two months ago when the state government mobilised contractors to the site to commence construction of the canal. However, the slow pace of work on the project is creating fears for the people that the project may not be completed on time or may be abandoned. When Community News visited the site last week, workers were seen working on the canal. An Engineer at the site who spoke on condition of anonnymity, explained that the idea was to open up the place to allow for free flow of water from various sources in the area. The Engineer stated that the residents have been entertaining fears that the canal might not be completed on time, but assured that the situation was under control." We are trying to complete the project as scheduled. Our major constraint has been constant rainfall in this area. We are going to meet up with the time frame as stated in the contract papers."Community News leant that the situation of flooding in the area had greatly been abated as a result of the construction work going on in the area.
