Lagos builds new re-settlement camp

ALIVE to its social responsibility, the Lagos State Government embarked on projects that will deliver more resettlement camps in the state.The feat is aimed at reducing the rate of displaced and homeless people on the streets.It would be recalled that victims of natural disasters within the state had increased in the recent time, hence the need for more resettlement camps.These camps are to be built in the three sectorial districts of the state, Ikorodu, Apapa and Igando, where homeless and displaced people will be camped for some months pending when they will be resettled.Already, the state had completed Ikorodu project, construction.According to Mr. Egberongbe Tope, the state had embarked on these projects to cater for displaced citizens in case of fire disasters or flood.Tope, an engineer, with the contractor, NEESARM Construction International, further stated that the government does not have the intentions of giving the displaced another homes but to reduce the rate of homelessness as a result of the disasters by keeping and providing for their basic needs without payment of rent.''It is not necessarily only for 9 months. It depends on the type of disaster that happens. If it is something the people cannot handle in 9 months, the government will just have to extend their stay,'' he noted.The project, set to last within a year commenced in October 2011 by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). It is to be delivered in September 2012.The Igando camp occupies a 3-hectares of land and consists of 5 hostels with 20 rooms, making it a total of100 rooms, staff quarters with 3-bedrooms each, a multipurpose hall, stores, kitchen/dinning, toilets and a clinic.In 2007, it was reported that flood submerged houses in such communities as Ikosi-Ketu, mile 2, Agility, Owode Elede, Owode Onirin/ Agboyi, Odogun, Isheri. Ojodu Berger, Majidin, Maidan, Ajegun, Ajegunle, Itowo lowo amongst others thereby damaging a lot of houses and leaving majority homeless.
