The Ibadan girl on movie turf

Published by Guardian on Tue, 07 Aug 2012

Laide Bakare-Okunfulure, popularly called Laide or LBO, is one of the top Yoruba actresses and has done quite well for herself. The Ejiogun Lagiri Ibadan-native had her primary and secondary education in Lagos. She started her acting career in 1999. The Theatre Arts graduate from the University of Ibadan, who is a producer, director, record label owner and CEO, Simline International formerly Frontrow International, shares with DANIEL ANAZIA some of her firsts.First time you had a kissIt was during our valedictory party after secondary school at Birch Freeman High School, Lagos, and it was with our then head prefect, Jerry. The party was held at his house and I was trying to shy away from dancing, so, I engaged myself with dishing and serving of food. He had always told me he wanted to tell me something, but said he couldn't without holding my hands and I was like ' I'm listening. And there he went; it was quick and brief, but very memorable because we were at an open place. However, I must say my husband holds the best kiss I have ever had in life. First time on set/locationIt was a dream fulfilled and that was on Rotimi Makinde's movie, Ojo Eye. Rotimi Makinde is now a member of the Federal House of Representatives.First pay chequeIt wasn't cheque because the money was taken to our house and mother collected it on my behalf. I was 17 then, and it was from Ojo Eye. I think I was paid because I played the lead role. The movie actually earned me an award. First awardTHEMA Award, Best Upcoming Actress, 1999. First movie you produced Ewe Oju Omi, an adaptation of Femi Osofisan's Restless Run Of A Locust. First favourite fashion pieceWristwatch; I can't do without one. I love them and could spend a fortune on them. Also, I love four-wheel cars and other good automobiles.First fashion piece you bought with your moneyJeans pant. I used to be a jeans person, but now I'm more of short dresses, which are mostly red, black and pink because of my daughter. First time you boarded an airplaneIt was in the late 90s, I can't remember the exact year. It was a flight to Abuja.First journey abroad It was the UK, London. I have always fantasised seeing the Queen and her beautiful country while growing up. I travelled during the winter and it was terribly cold.First thing that attracted you in your hubby His gentleness and intelligence; he is a perfect gentleman any lady would want to have. On our first meeting, he helped me with my luggage and that was at the airport in 2005, while I was waiting for a flight. First time you had a baby It was memorable, though painful. I cried, but the beauty of the baby eased all the pains. And it was in America. First time you sneaked out for a partyI have never sneaked out for a party in my life; I'm not trying to say I'm a saint, but I 've always been a home girl. My first club party was at Cocoa House and that was in my first year in the university. I went in company of some friends and the Students' Union guys, who were trying to acquaint us with activities around the campus.First thing that attracts and pisses you off in peopleI appreciate good look and detest people who talk more than necessary.First item you put in your bag Money, then my phones.
