Scramble For Edo PDP 2012 Gubernatorial Ticket

Published by Guardian on Sun, 08 May 2011

BARELY one year to Edo States governorship election, the scramble for who becomes the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have begun with aspirants from Edo South and Edo North being major contenders.Although guidelines have not been released by the leadership of the party, a socio cultural group in Edo south, the Osaghaitose Group and a youth group in Edo North senatorial district of the state, the Afenmai Youth Vanguard for True Democracy, have begun lobbying to ensure that their candidate gets the partys ticket. Both groups have called on the party to shop for a credible candidate to face Governor Adams Oshiomhole in the election. The Osaghaito Group is drumming support for an Army General from the area, Charles Airhiavbere, who would be retiring from the soon. The Afemai youths urged the leadership of the party to give the ticket to Prof. Julius Ihonbvere, a former presidential aide, due to his loyalty to the PDP in past years.Speaking to journalists yesterday, National President of the Osaghaitose Group, Dr Greg Osahon, said: It would be suicidal for the PDP to impose a candidate that is not credible for the election. It is true that we are not a political group but we are urging them to ensure that one of our sons is picked, and we are suggesting that they choose Gen. Airhiavbere who has great respect for our Benin traditional heritage and the revered palace of the Oba, which is the soul of the Benin Kingdom. He has empowered hundreds of our sons in different places, and you can hardly see a man of such caliber in the politics of the state today apart from someone like Chief Tony Anenih. We hope and pray that the PDP cede the position to Edo South. And if that happens, they should listen to our call because we know he will do better than what the ACN government is doing today.
