Match fixing: FIFA official implicates Nigeria

NIGERIA is in the news again, this time on the wrong side following allegation of match-fixing levelled against the country by a former FIFA official.Chris Eaton implicated Nigeria in a match fixing allegation arising from the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa.The former head of security at FIFA alleged in an interview with Channel 4 News, that the Group B match between Nigeria and Greece at the last World Cup was investigated for suspected match-fixing.In the said game, Nigeria went up 1-0 through Kalu Uche's goal but things turned around when Sani Kaita was sent off in the 33rd minute for kicking Vasilis Torosidis after both players had briefly tangled as they tried to win the ball.Nigeria eventually lost the game as Greece came from behind to win the game 2-1 but tongues wagged that the outcome was helped in no small measure by the one-man advantage.Although FIFA has denied ever investigating any games from the tournament, the Eaton's comments has fuelled suspicion that match-fixing and corruption are rife in international football.
