Published by Tribune on Wed, 08 Aug 2012

Members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), on Wednesday, declared their unalloyed support for the re-election bid of Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko.According to the pensioners, supporting Mimiko would enable him to complete his laudable and life impacting programmes. The spokesperson of the Akure South Local Government chapter of the union, Mr Pius Ariyo, stated that pensioners in the state had enjoyed unprecedented support from the Mimiko-led government, particularly in the area of prompt payment of pensions and gratuities, thereby alleviating their agonies. He said: "It is on record that the administration of Dr Olusegun Mimiko, immediately on assumption of office in 2009, paid about N1.4 billion backlog of pensions and gratuities to pensioners in the state."Ariyo, who affirmed that the re-election bid of the governor was divine, added that it would be difficult for anybody to change it, stressing that the union, as a non-partisan association, was bound to support any government that did the will of the people.Mimiko, in his remarks, congratulated the pensioners for their meritorious service to the country and also lauded their bold decision to support the progressive and masses-oriented government. The governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr Kola Ademujimi, urged the pensioners not to mortgage the future of the state by allowing unscrupulous politicians to purchase their voter cards. He also urged them not to be distracted by lies of the opposition parties.
