Afolayan is 'New Generation Leader for Africa

Published by Guardian on Wed, 08 Aug 2012

AWARD-WINNING Nigerian film director and actor, Kunle Afolayan, who has distinguished himself in the art of filmmaking in Nigeria with his ground-breaking cinematic pieces, recently received another nod for his meritorious work on the continent. In July, the African Leadership Network (AFL) recognised Afolayan as a '2012 New Generation Leader for Africa' via a thorough process where thousands of suitably qualified young African candidates were presented to AFL's selection committee. The honour, relayed to Afolayan by a statement signed by Fred Swaniker, co-founder, African Leadership Network, also confers him with automatic membership of the network. Each year, AFL scours the continent in search of a new generation of leaders for Africa 'leaders who despite their relatively young age, have tremendous influence and are uniquely positioned to play a role in taking Africa to a new era of prosperity. With this recognition, the filmmaker, whose latest film Phone Swap won the award for Best Achievement in Art Direction at the 2012 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), assumes a global identity with the capacity to intervene in relevant issues which relate to the continent. Phone Swap is currently going round cinemas around the world, while the U.K and U.S premieres in collaboration with OHTV is expected to hold in September. The amiable director is both delighted and humbled by the AFL recognition and the responsibility that comes with such honour. 'AFL picks top shots from different life endeavours for this recognition; examples this year are Biola Alabi, M.D. MNET Africa; Wale Tinubu, Group Chief Executive, Oando Plc and Asa, the musician, amongst others. For me to have been picked as well, is an acknowledgement of my work and that I really appreciate', the M.D. of Golden Effects Pictures stated.
