OAU VC: 14 professors in final round of interview

The race for the appointment of a new vice chancellor for Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, begins tomorrow, as 14 candidates shortlisted for the job face a five-man panel who will pick the best candidates among them.The panel is headed by Senator Olu Alabi, a medical practitioner and chairman of the governing council of the institution and two members of its Senate.The tenure of the incumbent Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Faborode, ends on June 23.The shortlisted candidates, who emerged from about 22 professors who applied for the job, had nine professors from OAU and five others from outside the institution.One of the shortlisted candidates, Professor M. E. Aluko, may, however, not appear for the interview, as he has just been appointed vice chancellor of the newly established federal university in Otuoke, Bayelsa State.Among those that would appear before the panel are Professor M.A. Badejo, the vice chancellor of Wesley University of Technology, Ondo (WUSTO), as well as two serving deputy vice chancellors of OAU, Professor Funmi Togonu-Bicker-steth and Professor S.A. Adesanya.Others include Professor F. A. Adesina, current Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences; Professor K. A. Alao, former dean, Faculty of Education and chairman, Committee of Deans; Professor C. A. Ajayi; Professor I. B.Omole; Professor E. O. Ogunbodedeand Professor S. R. A. Adewusi.Those from outside the institution include Professor Bolaji Sule, former Dean and Director of Hydropower, University of Ilorin; Professor J. F. Iyun from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria; Professor O. S. Fatoki from a university in South Africa and Professor A. Oladipupo from a University in the United states of America.Meanwhile, a refendum conducted by the OAU branch of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on April 20, rated Professor Adesina high, with 170 votes, representing 29.77 per cent of the votes cast, while Professor Alao and Professor Ajayi came second and third respectively with 89 and 72 votes.ASUU chairman, Dr Ife Adewumi, in a signed statement, said the referendum was conducted as an input of the union to the process of the selection of a new vice chancellor, on the basis of the advertisement by the governing council of the institution.
