Traders in Challenge debunk report on defeated politician

Published by Tribune on Mon, 09 May 2011

Contrary to areport that adefeated House of Representatives contestant in the just concluded general elections has been venting her anger on some traders around a filling station in Challenge area of Ibadan city, some of the traders in the area have debunked the story, saying the story was far from the truth. The traders, who spoke with Community News, said that the contestant, who is also the controller of a popular petrol station in the area, had been nothing but a mother unto us, adding that this wont be the first time the woman would chase people away from the area because of what they called an infringement on the agreement that they kept the vicinity clean.Solomon Omokpia, who was a spokesperson for the traders, said it was the agreement between the traders and the woman,  to keep the place safe with a warning that whoever failed would be sent parking. In 2004, she sent us away but we begged her and she agreed that we should go back and do our business on condition that we kept the place clean. When we failed in 2006, she sent us away again and we went to plead with her again to help us.This time around, the same thing happened and she has sent people away. She only sent about seven people away out of about 15-20 of us who are there because they failed to keep their areas, clean and not because she lost an election.Solomon, who gave the traders reason for wanting to correct the wrong impression, said that it would amount to ingratitude on our part if we fail to say the fact. What people told the person who wrote the first story was not true. I have been selling CDs there for a long time and I know what they had said was not true. The traders, therefore, appealed that the people telling untrue stories about the woman should desist from doing so.
