Miscreants take over marked buildings in Oke-Odo

Published by Tribune on Mon, 09 May 2011

Miscreantsand illicit ginsellers, have taken over some of the buildings marked out for demolition on Pipeline street, Aboru in Agbado-Oke-Odo Local Council Development area of Alimosho Local Government in Lagos. The buildings, marked for demolition more than one year ago by the state government for being too close to the NNPC pipeline that runs through the area, have been turned into smoking and drinking joints after their original owners had heeded the state governments directive to vacate the area.Expressing their concerns about the activities of these miscreants in the area, Pa Awosanya, a resident of the community believed that the activities of the miscreants constituted a serious danger to lives in the area. For instance, hemp is smoked publicly at these joints by these miscreants, and this is not good in this type of society that has many young ones that are still growing up. It could rub off negatively on them since they might have the belief that once these things are being smoked publicly without any fear, then what these people are doing is legal, he stated. He, however, called on the state government to expedite action on these buildings by either pulling them down as earlier planned or have  them returned to their original owners if the government had changed its mind about the demolition. For Abiodun Arowosaye, who runs a petty business in the area, the activities of these miscreants must be closely monitored to prevent the possibility of the area being turned into a black spot. The uncompleted buildings may be turned into where crime is planned before being carried out. Besides, it could even be converted to a spot where the targets of these criminals are monitored, he stated. He argued that the state government should not have marked the buildings in the area for demolition when it knew it was not yet ready to carry out the demolition, adding If urgent steps are not taken we may have security issue on our hands.
