65-year-old man loses house to fire

Property worthseveral millionsof naira were destroyed when a four flat storey building at No.134 Convent Street, Boji-Boji Owa in Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State, was gutted by fire recently.According to the 65-year-old landlord of the house, Mr. Augustine Siwekwu, the fire started from the meter point as a result of power surge when the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) restored electricity supply to the house at about 11am on the day.Mr. Siwekwu disclosed on Tuesday that men of the fire service at Agbor were immediately contacted, but they were not able to salvage the situation.He stated that all his building particulars, drivers licence vehicle particulars, his childrens certificates, his electronics and furniture were lost to the fire disaster.Narrating her ordeal, one of the tenants in the building, Goodnews Chinasa Ihezuonu, who is a lecturer at the College of Education, Agbor, recounted his loss to the inferno.All that I had in life such as my certificates from primary school to master degree level, my PhD admission proceedings, all my works, credentials, my appointment and promotion letters, my Dell laptop, projects in different fields, seminar papers and journals were all burntAlso my books, clothes, furniture and electronics went up in flames, pointing out that she was left with the only cloth that she wore to work on that day of the disaster.Meanwhile, both the landlord and the lecturer have appealed passionately to the Delta State Government through the State Emergency Relief Agency (SERA),Ika North-East Local Government Council, corporate bodies, religious and philanthropic organisations as well as public spirited individuals in the society to come to their aid.
