Paul, Michael, Terry are CBN Junior Tennis champions

CHRISTIAN Paul caused the biggest upset at the just-concluded fifth CBN Junior Tennis Championship when he defeated Nigerias leading youngster, Emmanuel Idoko, 9-4 at the weekend in the final of the U-18 event at the prestigious Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.Also Victorious was Michael Michael who beat Sylvester Emmanuel in the boys U-16 category to cart home the trophy, just as Biodun David proved too good for Olumide Ayoola in the U-14 class.Crowd pleaser, Michael Oshewa, was not left out of the exciting times as he smiled home with the trophy by beaten John Dickson 9-8 in the U-12 class, while Terry Dias ruled the U-10 boys category with a 9-1 emphatic win over Jebutu Emmanuel.In the girls Open category, 16-year-old Afolarin Akosile relied heavily on the experience she acquired from Botswana, where she featured in the African Junior Championship, to subdue hard fighting Oyilomo Quadre Barakat 9-1 to emerge champion.Declaring the championship closed, CBN Director (Governors Dept), Faruk Garko, who was represented by Ifechukwu Anthony, commended the players for displaying professionalism in the course of the championship, and promised that CBN would continue to support the development of the sport in the country.The organization, according to him, is happy to be part of the process of producing feature tennis stars in the country and will continue in that direction, as long as the organisers remained committed to the event, which is the fore runner to the annual Central Bank National Open Tennis Championship.Meanwhile, eight players were chosen at the end of the tournament as CBN features team.
