Secrets of Smart Memory

Published by Guardian on Mon, 09 May 2011

A GREAT memory can help you succeed in school, in your job and life. It can help you learn faster and fast learners are always in demand. They also make more moneyWith this belief, Mike Adeleye carefully spotlights some important points that people took for granted in his The Secret Behind Smart Memory and intelligent Quotient. Some of the things he touched on in the seven chapter-book of 56-page include how to raise smart kids.In these chapters, he points out that it is the task of adults to help children simplify tasks by providing external memory aids, understanding their assimilation and providing a friendly educative environment as well as books and make the books interactive.Playing with children and making them feel loved, he notes, is essential. He recommends educative toys such as toys that teach them about colours, songs of the alphabet which help their memory rather than toys such as gunsthat would only impress the child. He said simple habits such as proper sleep, intense cardio-vascular exercise, oxygenating the brain and eating healthy foods help the brain work at its best. These habits if not committed to might directly hurt your memory in case of lack of sleep. His argues thus, it is at night that the brain organizes what is learnt during the day, to strengthen the memory, it is vital to get enough quality sleep.Do not be upset if you forget because, Adeleye says, it is normal to forget. Even the smartest person does not remember everything. It only protects the mind from becoming cluttered with trivial details this sort of forgetfulness is only normal to a certain degree.Creating cues intentionally would help in remembering something, since the information is always there. No matter how bad the memory is, visualization and association, which is simply converting abstract information into easy to remember mental pictures, will work well. While a lot of people chew gum for different reasons far from memory retention, Adeleye says chewing motion increases heart rate and this in turn increases blood flow to the head and brain which means more oxygen that helps the brain work better. Rather than chew all day for any other reason, this exercise could be reserved for when optimal mental performance is required. A small bar of dark chocolate could also be eaten for crunch time to get a brain boost. He however warns that if one is trying to loose weight eating chocolate could be avoided just like he recommends sugar free for the chewing exercise. The writer marshals points that enhance best study skills as reduction of interference since the brain could mix up new information with what was learnt before. Over-learning the material will also help strengthen memory for any material and one of the ways it does this is by reducing possible interference. There is no magic, memory pill you need to swallow if you want to improve your memory, all you need to know is to learn these memory techniques and make a few life changes to improve your brain overall functioning.
