Published by Guardian on Mon, 09 May 2011

THE 81st anniversary of Okpe Union will hold on Monday, May 16, 2011 at Okpe Union Headquarters, 65 Moshalasi Street, Obalende, Lagos at 2.00p.m.The theme of the event, according to Secretary General, Okpe Union Worldwide, Henry Ebireri, is Taking Okpe Kingdom to the next level. In a statement, Ebireri said Okpe Union, the umbrella body uniting all communities of Okpe Kingdom, has since its inception in 1930 become a formidable forum for Okpe people, both at home and in the Diaspora to express solidarity in their collective quest for economic empowerment and political emancipation within the context of their belief in one, united and prosperous Okpe kingdom in particular and Nigeria in general. This years event, he stressed, promises to be unique because it is coming against the backdrop of a heightened political consciousness among Okpe towards a reassertion of their ethnic and cultural identity, and an unequivocal re-definition of their positioning within the political landscape of the Nigerian nation state.Ebireri added: The event is being organised to sensitise and educate Okpe people on key issues, to task the state and federal governments on a number of issues affecting the kingdom, promote  Okpe culture, review the state of development, provide fresh and in-depth perspectives to Okpe  issues/challenges and identify critical factors in  the development of the kingdom.
