Zamfara CNPP backs gov-elect

Published by Guardian on Mon, 09 May 2011

CONFERENCE of Nigeria Political Parties(CNPP) Zamfara State chapter, has expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct and outcome of the April general elections in the state.Fielding questions from reporters at the weekend in Gusau, state Chairman, CNPP, Zayyanu Haske, said the conference has also resolved to support the state Governor-Elect, Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, for the development of the state.According to him, despite some shortcomings noticed in the polls, the Independent National Electoral Commission deserved commendations for introducing several measures that curtailed riggings in the elections.Haske said the era of blind antagonism against winners of election was gone, noting that democracy could only strive in an atmosphere devoid of bickering and rancour,The CNPP, Haske contended, has always believed in constructive criticism. This he added informed the modest achievement recorded on the political landscape of the state, pointing out that CNPP had extended same cooperation to the out-going administration of Governor Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi. While reminding the governor-elect to redeem his electoral promises to the electorate, the CNPP chairman stressed that it would not hesitate to offer its own contribution to the new government if such demand was made to it.He debunked insinuations that the CNPP has been promised three commissioner slots in the yet to be constituted new cabinet.Haske stressed that at no time did the governor-elect or his agents made the request to the CNPP.I have not been contacted neither has anybody in the CNPP been invited to join the All Nigeria Peoples Party to form a government in Zamfara State, he said.    Greedy politicians fuelled post-election violenceFrom Njadvara Musa, DamaturuBishop of the Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, Rev. Oliver Doeme Dashe, has attributed the post-election violence some parts of the North to greedy politicians who had been feeding fat on the Achilles heels of Christians and Muslims in the country.Speaking with reporters at a mass organised over the weekend for youths from the 26 parishes of the diocese in Damaturu, Dashe said the concerned politicians were out to perpetuate their selfish political interests in the affected areas at the expense of national unity, peace and security of lives and property. He listed ignorance, illiteracy and poverty as some of the weaknesses of many Christians and Muslims in the country, which politicians with parochial interest have always cashed in on to cause crisis in the country, especially in the north. However, Dashe noted that the last elections were free, authentic, credible and fair, stressing that the post-election violence was needless.Arguing that the post-election mayhem was pre-planned, the cleric urged the Federal Government to fish out the masterminds of the violence for prosecution to serve as deterrent to others. He added: Some politicians, for their selfish interest, used religion to whip up sentiments to cause crisis that led to the lost of many lives and property in the North.Dashe said people who caused chaos of such magnitude should not go scot-free in order to protect Nigerias nascent democracy and good governance. The cleric expressed the hope that victims of the violence would be compensated by government at all levels, as none of the two religions condoned violence and political intimidations. He therefore, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to initiate a special reorientation programme, including education, social enlightenment and poverty eradication so that the masses would be equipped to rebuff bad propositions from evil politicians. In his brief remarks, president of the Diocesan Youth, John-Michael Essian said the diocese have packaged programmes that would equip youths of the Catholic faith against crimes and other social vices.Essian urged youths in the country to stop giving in to the wimps and caprices of evil politicians and highly placed individuals.
