Secession is unconstitutional - NBA president

Published by Tribune on Wed, 15 Aug 2012

OUTGOING president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), J. B. Daudu, on Tuesday, said the proposed secession by the people of Ogoniland and the proposed introduction of a seperate flag and anthem by Bayelsa State are unconstitutional and illegal, as such provisions did not exist in the Nigerian constitution.Daudu, who stated this in Abuja, while addressing a press conference on the preparation for the forthcoming national bar conference, charged the government to stop such act.He said no constitution provided for a state to have its separate flag or anthem, apart from the national flag and anthem, adding that states could have a slogan or jingle to depict what it was known for, but not anthem or flag.On the forthcoming bar conference holding in Abuja between August 26 and 31, the NBA boss said some branches had informed the national leadership of their non-participation because of the increase in the conference fee.Daudu, however, called on members of such branches to stay clear of the venue of the conference, as security would deal with any uninvited guest. On the controversy trailing the just-concluded election of the association, the NBA president said Emeka Ngige was suffering from post-election defeat, adding that his allegations were baseless.According to him, 'we will not tolerate people who, because of their association with street politics, will want to drag this association in the mud. This is a noble profession and not a political party. 'Ngige has lost from the Eastern bloc where the presidency was zoned to, even before coming for the election. The people from the zone have made up their mind on who to vote for and thank God the person of their choice emerged as the leader.'We, the outgoing executives, have no candidate, we have done our own part and we are leaving, it was the lawyers that determined who they wanted and not the executive council members, we have nothing to achi-eve by rigging the election.
