Empowerment programme: ACN members defect to PDP in Ekiti

Published by Tribune on Fri, 17 Aug 2012

More than 100 members of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) recently defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ward A, Igede-Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State. The defection was attributed to the recent empowerment programme initiated in the local government by a PDP leader in the state, Ambassador Gbenga Olofin.According to a release issued by Mr Lere Olayinka, the media assistant to the PDP National Vice-chairman, Chief Segun Oni, the ACN members cited neglect by the party and its leaders and insensitivity to the plights of the people as the reasons for their defection to PDP."If a party that is not in government can be committed to the welfare of the people as being done by the PDP, then, we have no choice than to dump the ACN", they said.Ambassador Olofin had renovated some houses accommodating aged women and provided them with new beddings, cooking, furniture and electronic materials. He also promised to fix all leaking roofs of houses belonging to PDP members in Igede-Ekiti to prevent rainfall from disturbing them and urged those whose roofs were leaking to register at their various wards.Welcoming the defectors to the party last Monday, Ambassador Olofin said their decision to join the PDP was a right step in the right direction, adding; "more goodies are coming and when these goodies start to come, you will all partake in them."He assured that the defectors would be accorded the same recognition as old members, adding that; "We are not going to discriminate against you. From today, you will enjoy all benefits available to members of our great party, PDP."Also speaking at the event, immediate past state chairman of the party, Chief Bola Olu-Ojo, said; "We appreciate your coming very much because your are coming at a time when only committed and strong-hearted people can take this kind of decision."We have been having people coming to join us from other places in the state and we are sure that people will continue to leave the ACN because the party has obviously failed them."Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Madam Morenike Ogunleye said their decision to leave the ACN was as a result of total neglect by the party."We are happy to be out of the ACN and we will make sure we bring more of our former colleagues in the party to the PDP," she said.
