Falconets impress with opening victory

Published by Tribune on Mon, 20 Aug 2012

NIGERIA's U-20 women's team, Falconets start the FIFA Women's World Cup on an impressive note as they hammered Korea Republic by two unreply goals at the Komaba Stadium in Saitama yesterday to take an early lead at the top of Group B.Ngozi Okobi scored the first goal for Falconets in the 15th minute of play from a cross from Francisca Ordega, while Desire Oparanozie sealed the victory with a brilliant nodding in the 67th minute. The Falconets, backed by a buoyant and colourful band of supporters, went ahead following smart work from Ordega on the right side of the box, with the midfielder playing a perfect low ball across the face of goal for Okobi to score. With Okobi, Ordega and Oparanozie all dangerous in possession, Nigeria provided a regular threat, although Korea Republic, with their short-passing game in evidence, provided a tough opponent for the 2010 runners-up.However, Korea Republic suffered a massive blow in the latter stage of the first half with their midfield Yeo Minji, the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup adidas Golden Ball winner, forced off the match with injury. However, Falconets striker, Ngozi Okobi, the scorer of the first goal emerges best player of the game.
