Ondo parties in messy campaign for votes

Published by Guardian on Tue, 21 Aug 2012

THE Olusegun Mimiko Campaign Organisation has accused Olusola Oke and Rotimi Akeredolu, governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), of habouring ill for the people given their alleged plan to destroy existing legacies in Ondo State. But in a swift reaction, the Akeredolu Campaign Organisation (ACO) described the Mimiko-led administration as 'anti-people because he has collected over N600 billion from the Federation Account in the past three-and-a-half years and all he has done are window dressing projects like markets and town halls, which have no direct bearing on the socio-economic development of majority of the people.'ACN also alleged plot by the Labour Party (LP) to rig the forthcoming governorship elections, using arms and ammunition and other dangerous weapons, which it said the governor's group has started importing into Akure, the state capital.Specifically, the Mimiko Organisation enjoined the people of Ondo State to reject Oke and Akeredolu, claiming they have no genuine plans for them but would take the fortunes of the state to the dogs if either of them was elected. In a statement issued by its Director of Publicity and Media Relations, Mr. Kolawole Olabisi, the Mimiko group noted that 'utterances of the opposition candidates in recent times have shown that they both harbour sinister motives for the people.'We want to say emphatically and without any iota of equivocation that Ondo State, under Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, is working and to God be this glory. Mimiko has turned around the fortunes of Ondo State for good. And those who want to take Ondo State backward by several years and lead our librated and happy citizens back intoslavery must be prevented,' the group said. But ACN said under Mimiko, the Dome project of N1.2 billion has been abandoned, he has not commissioned a kilometre of road, he has not provided jobs for the teeming unemployed youth of Ondo State. He could not revive one out of moribund industries, claiming that there is no electricity to power them. But the same governor is using generating set to power streetlights on the Oba Adesida Road!He is showcasing roundabout as an achievement with all the money accruing to the state while all the inner roads in Akure metropolis and the state are completely in shambles.'This government continues to deceive the public. He claims to have built the Mother and Child Hospitals across the state, indeed in each local council, which is not true. He only recently claims to have built 225 housing units in Oba-Ile Akure, we challenge him to show this to the whole world. Indeed, the government is a deceit.
