Anambra-North claims turn to produce next gov

Published by Guardian on Tue, 21 Aug 2012

WITH almost two years to the end of the second term of Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, politicians from Anambra-North Senatorial Zone are lining up for the office. The politicians, who claimed that it is the turn of the zone to produce the next governor of the state, are holding alignment meetings across the state.Although most of the possible contestants for the office from different political parties are yet to openly declare their intention, they are in accord that the zone would unite to get the governorship ticket from any of the friendly and formidable political parties.Anambra-North Constituency comprises Ayamelum, Anambra-East, Anambra-West, Oyi, Ogbaru, Onitsha-North and Onitsha-South councils. The South and Central zones have already produced the governors of the state.Senator Emma Anosike confirmed that the zone was working on the project, but others preferred to speak on the matter at 'the right time.'Anosike, who is from the Anambra-North, told The Guardian that the area is favoured to produce the next governor and affirmed that they are ready to take up the challenge. In an interview with The Guardian yesterday, Anosike admitted that the zone, normally referred to as the food-basket of the state, is ready to give the state a capable and effective governor in the next dispensation. But he remarked that 'the next governor must consolidate on the achievements of Obi, reduce the cost of governance through by neutralising the undue protocol in governance and make the aides more effective and useful.'Also, the governor must make better use of the traditional rulers, as well as other established local institutions and organisations.'Revolving loan policy should be established to advance funds to all healthy and employable hands, especially women and youth cooperatives, while skill acquisition centres must be set up and taken beyond mere political rhetoric'.On the crisis rocking both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state, Anosike said it was unfortunate and cautioned that 'it cost the PDP the governorship in 2010 and it could cost APGA everything, including its slim existence in the state. So, they need to tackle it decisively at once.
