Pro-Biafra groups at war over proposed secession date

Published by Tribune on Wed, 22 Aug 2012

RIVALRY between the Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM) and the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) is now taking a new dimension, as the two Igbo groups are currently in a war of words, over recent announcement that Biafra would be declared a republic on November 15.Speaking with news-men in Enugu, on Tues-day, the leader of BZM, Ben Onwuka, alleged that the leadership of MAS-SOB had not been comfortable with their recent application for Biafra membership of United Nations (UN), saying his life was in danger. But Uchenna Madu, an aide to MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, swiftly dismissed the allegation, saying that MASSOB had not ordered the killing or abduction of the BZM leader. It will be recalled that Uwazuruike had earlier dissociated himself from the November declara-tion, even as Onwuka had replied, saying that Biafra would be realised with or without the MASSOB leader. He told newsmen that 'MASSOB leadership is not happy that the cam-paign for the indepen-dence of Biafra has now been elevated to the international community, which is my argument that Biafra must be internationalised before it can be realised.'Onwuka alleged that a directive to have him arrested and killed, alongside his men was given during a meeting of MASSOB in Onwe, Imo State, last week. But in his reaction, Madu who is in charge of MASSOB publicity, dismissed the claims, insisting that there was no such directive during the last meeting of the body.'I am not aware of anything like that; I was in that meeting, that's why I am saying that these allegations sound strang,' the MASSOB image maker added.
