SON destroys N1 billion fake goods

Published by Guardian on Fri, 24 Aug 2012

THE Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has succeeded in reducing the presence of sub-standard products in the nation's markets by 70 per cent and has also destroyed sub-standards products worth over N1 billion since the launch of its zero tolerance campaign.Director General and Chief Executive Officer of SON, Dr Joseph Odumodo made this known during a facility tour to Lafarge Ewekoro factory, Bio-Organic Limited, Cometstar Manufacturing Company, Homan Industries Limited and MINL SUMO Limited.According to him, the agency will soon celebrate 70 per cent reduction in the level of sub-standard products in the country. The decision to reduce substandard products, he said, was informed by the organisation's desire to provide confidence in products manufactured, imported and distributed in Nigeria for the overall benefit of the Nigerian economy and the welfare of its people.Odumodu therefore called on all consumers to support the initiative by paying greater attention to products and their characteristics in their purchase decisions, complain to relevant authorities when not satisfied and provide useful information to SON and other relevant agencies on suspected substandard products movement, storage and distribution for prompt action. He said that the agency was serious in its effort to implement the ISO 26000, which is about Social Responsibility.'This does not focus on how much profit you make, but how you make the profit. This is going to be adopted before the end of the year', he added.Odumodu disclosed that SON would begin the process with visits to the three main cement sites in the country, following which a stakeholders' forum will be held.He said the forum would be used as platform for the development of a new framework for quality assurance along the cement manufacturing, sales and usage value chain. The new framework, according to him, will soon be developed and adopted by the agency and stakeholders to ensure that policy concerns among stakeholders in the cement value chain were addressed.'The next phase is to define a new framework to make sure that policy concerns among stakeholders are addressed with the quality of products produced and used assured,' Odumodu said.
