Golden Shoe 2015-16: Top Goalscorers in Europe, Updated Standings on May 9

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 09 May 2016

Two goals for Barcelona forward Luis Suarez kept his team in control of La Liga's title race and in a comfortable position at the top of the Golden Shoe standings with the season close to an end.The Blaugranas nearest rivals for the title are Real Madrid, who in Cristiano Ronaldo have Suarezs main challenger, too. The Portuguese also notched a brace on Sunday as Los Blancos clung on to beat Valencia 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu. If Barcelona drop points in the final week, a win for Real would be enough to see them crowned champions.Four goals separate Suarez and Ronaldo at this late stage of the campaign, meaning the former is going to be extremely difficult to catch. Here is a look at the standings following the latest games and a recap of how the best goal-getters on the continent fared.Rules: Every league in Europe is rated on its difficulty by UEFA and attributed a constant between one and two. With a rating of two, goals scored in La Liga and the Premier League are doubled to achieve a player's points tally, whereas in Ligue 1, they are only multiplied by 1.5.Suarez Preserves LeadOnce again, Suarez stole the show for the Blaugrana, as he was the driving force in a 5-0 win over Espanyol in the Catalan derby. While a lot of Barcas players have looked a little jaded at the end of a testing season, the Uruguay international is now playing his best football. Suarez has taken up the responsibility of being the main man in attack, and defences across Spain are struggling to handle his ferocious forward play, with 11 goals scored in four games. As these numbers from Squawka Football suggest, the striker has been in red-hot form in all competitions throughout the entirety of the season:To outscore Ronaldo by four goals at this point is impressive in itself. The Portuguese has found his touch in front of goal again under manager Zinedine Zidane and has helped Real put together an excellent run of form in La Liga, with the team having now won a whopping 11 games in succession domestically. While you wouldnt put it past Ronaldo bagging four on the final day against Deportivo La Coruna to move alongside Suarez, itd be a big surprise; the pair shared the award in 2013-14, when the Uruguay international was at Liverpool. These numbers from Sky Sports Statto show just how prolific Ronaldo has been since moving to Real Madrid:Elsewhere on the continent, Napoli man Gonzalo Higuain continued his excellent form, netting in a 2-1 win over Torino. While the Naples side may have let some impetus slip in the race for the title late in the season, Higuain has continued to be prolific when taking to the field. He now has three in his last two having netted a brace against Atalanta last Monday.BT Sports James Horncastle broke down just how impressive the Argentina international has been this term, noting hes on the brink of a historical landmark:Bayern Munich clinched the Bundesliga title this weekend thanks to an excellent brace from their star striker Robert Lewandowski. The Polish international bagged both of his goals in the first half as Bayern ran out easy winners over FC Ingolstadt. Lewandowski has been key to their dominance in the division this term, with a hugely impressive 29 goals; as we can see here, thats a total that has not been accrued in top-flight German football for a long time:Barring a staggering turn of events, Suarez will clinch this award for the second time in three seasons, thus cementing his status as the finest No. 9 in world football at the moment. Not only does he score goals, the forward is a pest to opposition defenders with his appetite for the game, understated strength and penchant for producing something out of the ordinary. Ronaldo could still yet salvage something if he turns in one of his virtuoso goalscoring displays, but all eyes will be on who clinches the title come the final weekend.
