Iyiazi in bad outing

NIGERIA's hope of getting another medal through Eucharia Iyiazi, was dashed late Tuesday night as the lady failed to qualify for the final of the women's Discus Throw in the ongoing London 2012 Paralympics.Iyiazi, who won two gold medals for Nigeria at Beijing 2008 Paralympics in Discus Throw and Shot put finished in distant 13th position to the surprise of her fellow teammates as well as a few Nigerians present at the Olympic Stadium.The Maputo 2011 All Africa gold medallist, who also holds the Paralympic record of 36.21 metres set four years ago in China, could only throw 26.61 metres this time.Interestingly, another Nigerian who also competed for the event, Grace Nwaozuzu, finished fifth after recording 33.77 metres throw.Team Nigeria officials led by Secretary of the Nigeria Paralympic Committee, Dr Frank Thorpe, were stunned by the performance of Iyiazi at the Olympic Stadium, as she was regarded as one of the medal hopeful at the Games given her antecedents.Lovelyne Obiji, had earlier in the day given Nigeria its fifth gold medal in the -82kg women's powerlifting event.
