How to tackle insurgency in Nigeria, by Tambuwal

Speaker House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal yesterday explained how the country's current security challenges arising from insurgency can be tackled, saying military alone cannot successfully deal with the situation.Speaking at the opening session of a weeklong training programme 'Exercise No-Man's Land' organized by the Tactical Air Command of Nigerian Air Force' in Sokoto, the speaker said it was with a combination of all national powers through effective utilization of economic and political spectrums that success can be achieved.{loadposition user30}'The the efforts to defeat or at worst neutralize the insurgents should be the corner stone of our strategy. I must warn, however, that success here will not be measured by the number of causalities you inflict on the insurgents but by how you are able to accomplish the laid out political-military objective whilst retaining the hearts and minds of the populace.'At the political level we have to, in addition to providing adequate resources and oversight, ensure the proper funding of military and indeed other security agencies, provide the political space for dialogue, inclusion and socio-economic development', he said.Chief of Air staff, Air Marshal MD Umar, identified the need to develop new and modern tactics and doctrine to deal with the threat of insurgents.
