Champions League Final 2016: Head-to-Head Record Before Real Madrid vs. Atletico

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 27 May 2016

Real Madrid will hope to continue their historical dominance of rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday as the two teams meet in the UEFA Champions League final at San Siro in Milanfor a rematch two years in the making.Back in 2014, Real scored a last-minute equaliser to snatch the title from Atleticoin extra time for the 2013-14 season, finally winning La Decima after more than a decade of waiting.Few teams have played each other more in recent years than these two rivals from the Spanish capital; they also met in the 2014-15 Champions League and in last year's Copa del Rey. And while Real historically hold the advantage, they've beaten the Rojiblancos just once since the 2014 Champions League final. Here's a look at the head-to-head record for these two teams, courtesy of Footballzz.com:The Madrid derby has a rich history, both on and off the pitch, which FourFourTwo's Richard Ballout does an excellent job of explaining. But the historic rivalry between both clubs has long been relatively one-sided, as evidenced by the head-to-head record.Real are one of the most successful clubs in the sport and have a winning record against most teams, but their record against Atletico is particularly impressive. In the Champions League, they've lost just one of six.Recent history paints a different picture, however. After a few seasons outside of Spain's top division, Atletico have emerged as a new force of European football, winning two UEFA Europa League titles and nearly beating Real to the Champions League title in 2014.Their emergence can no longer be overlookedAtletico once again challenged for the Spanish title until the penultimate matchday of the 2015-16 campaign, and their defeat of Barcelona in Europe was beyond impressive. The Rojiblancos are a top team on the level of Real, even if Blancos star Gareth Bale doesn't believe so, as he told Cope (h/t Sport): For me, no Atletico player would get into the Real Madrid team."Atletico have won two of their last five against Real while losing just one, and per ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan, manager Diego Simeone's troops have looked like the better side in most of the last 10 derbies.Los Blancos simply don't match up well with the Rojiblancos, arguably the best defensive team in Europe. Atletico break at pace, don't need a lot of chances to score and generally don't give away too many open looks.Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe took a look at the form of both teams this season, highlighting Real's defence as a weakness:But Real's dominance in Europe shouldn't be taken lightly. Los Blancos always seem to play better in the Champions League, especially when their backs are against the wall, and the win over Atletico in the final two years ago was a prime example. As shared by Sky Sports News HQ, the team will also be boosted by the likely return of Cristiano Ronaldo, who comfortably leads Los Blancos in scoring:Gareth Bale's form has improved drastically since Zinedine Zidane replaced Rafa Benitez as manager, and he and Ronaldo will test Atletico's defence unlike any other duo.The last four contests between these teams have all been close encounters, ending in either draws or 1-0 wins. Saturday's final should be another tight battle between familiar foes who know each other's strengths andfewweaknesses well.Follow @ReverschPass
