Published by Guardian on Fri, 14 Sep 2012

ORGANISERS of the maiden edition of the World Peace Cup have reiterated that the championship is not about wrestling alone.Speaking yesterday, they said rather that the central focus of the championship was using the wrestling competition to preach peace in the country and the world at large.'The championship is not about wrestling alone, it is about peace in the country. We want to leverage on the goodwill of the wrestlers to preach peace in the country,' the Local Organising Committee (LOC) Secretary General, Jide Salau, said.To achieve this said objective, the organisers said the World Peace Cup, which will hold across six towns in the country from November 2-16, would be staged in four phases. The wrestlers will be involved in this by walking through the streets and talking to people and propagating peace in the process. The third phase is a seminar for peace, which will involve notable Nigerians brainstorming on the way forward in the country, whilethe last phase is the wrestling proper, which holds across six towns in the country, from November 2-16, with Lagos and Abuja already confirmed.A registered sports promoting outfit, Great Power Uti World-Wide Sports Incorporated, is the franchise owner of the World Peace Cup and also the official promoter of this tournament.Wrestlers to feature in the tourney willcome from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Italy, UK, Japan, Greece, France, Spain and Australia, alongside four other African nations - Cameroun, Congo DR, Uganda and host, Nigeria.
