Published by Tribune on Tue, 18 Sep 2012

Over 200 members of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) and the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), on Monday, barricaded the access road of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos to prevent easy flow of vehicular movement as they protested the ejection of their members from the cargo shed area of the airport by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).The situation led to heavy traffic at the airport.FAAN, in its defence, had claimed that the cargo agents were evicted from their offices at the hajj and cargo areas for security reasons. It was, however, gathered that there was a joint security meeting where it was agreed that FAAN should carry out the eviction of the agents. At the meeting were members of the Aviation security arm of FAAN, the State Security Service (SSS) and the Nigeria Police.Victor Arisa, General Manager, Public Affairs, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, had said that the eviction followed the agreement reached early this year.According to him, the leadership of the associations agreed to relocate their operations from where they presently operate, adding that that the ultimatum issued the operators had since elapsed. It was learnt that government had already given the space to a concessionaire, who had since taken over the site. The concessionaire, it was learnt, is to build an ultra-modern terminal for cargo operations.
