Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 06 Jun 2016

England won the 2016 World Cup of Dartsthanks to a 3-2 victory over the Netherlands in Frankfurt, Germany, on Sunday.Phil Taylor sunk Michael van Gerwen in the night's opener, but Raymond van Barneveld helped the Netherlands pull level after beating Adrian Lewis. The pairs event also went the way of the Dutch, but after Taylor beat RVB in the penultimate matchup, it was left to Lewis to beat the world's top seed 4-1 and secure England's fourth World Cup crown. In the day's earlier semi-finals, Taylor breezed past Northern Irelands Brendan Dolan with a devastating whitewash to put England within one point of a final berth before Lewis beat Daryl Gurney 4-1.The Englishmen's arrows were too accurate in the final-four encounter, as they dropped just a single leg on the way to their fifth World Cup final. The Netherlands surpassed Belgium for their final appearance. Van Gerwen beatRonny Huybrechts 4-1 to give Van Barneveld some breathing space, and his team-mate replied with a 4-2 victory overKim Huybrechts.Live Darts detailed the schedule for the final action of the night:Taylor began the final in scintillating form, crashing in a 180 and an 85 finish to take the first leg with a 12-darter.Van Gerwen responded with a 180 and a 12-darter of his own to level things up before the Englishman hit a 149 finish to lift himself clear. The Dutchman recorded his second maximum of the evening session to tie the match at 2-2 before Taylorenjoying himself at the oche whilesmiling at the crowdmoved back in front with another 12-dart completion.Taylor missed a two-dart finish on double 20 as Van Gerwen tied up the contest in the first-to-four match, but England still took a 1-0 lead after a clutch finale from the 16-time world champion. The official PDC account captured the moment Taylor secured the victory:Lewis charged into a 2-0 lead in the second singles match of the evening, including a 180 and 13-dart finish. However, a drop of form allowed RVB to tie the contest at 2-2.The experienced Dutch player finished with his favourite double 16 to move back ahead, but Lewis would take the match to a deciding leg.Van Barneveld expertly nailed the final leg to win a superb singles match, as Live Darts noted:In the doubles contest, the Netherlands moved back ahead following a 4-2 victory to pin Taylor against Van Barneveld in what would prove to be the penultimate singles contest of the championship.Taylor then crushed his longtime nemesis with a convincing 4-1 victory to level up the contest at 2-2.Live Darts provided a rundown of all the results from the night:In the first-to-four finale between Lewis and world No. 1 Van Gerwen, the Englishman found double-three to open the scoring before breaking his opponent, as the Dutch player squandered four darts on the double. Both players were feeling the pressure on their shoulders, but Van Gerwen managed to halve the deficit after finding a double to finish at the 14th attempt. But Lewis regained his composure to break back immediately with a 76 finish before wrapping up the victory and the World Cup title.A heated exchange between Lewis and Van Gerwen followed England's triumphant celebrations, but the dispute was born out of the Dutchman's frustration at himself after losing his composure at the decisive moment of the match. In a repeat of the 2014 final, this time it was England who could enjoy lifting the title, as the pair took home the 50,000 prize.
