Copa America Results 2016: Group Results, Standings, Tables and Updated Schedule

Published by Bleacher Report on Mon, 06 Jun 2016

Group C action at the 2016 Copa America began with a match between Jamaica and Venezuela in Chicago on Sunday, with the group's top two teams set to square off at the end of the night.Mexico (No. 16) and Uruguay (No. 9), the two favorites to advance out of Group C, are both ranked within the top 20 in FIFA's international rankings.Saturday's action featured only one goal in three games combined, so more exciting play Sunday would be refreshing for fans who watched some periodically dispassionate soccer a day earlier. Here's a look at Sunday's results, the tournament's upcoming schedule and the updated standings for each group:Venezuela Def. Jamaica, 1-0Jamaica had to have been feeling good heading into Sunday's match, given its 2015 Gold Cup runner-up finish, but the first half proved to be disastrous. The team's fortunes could have improved if it had converted on a corner early in the match, as Fox Soccer showed:Yet Venezuela controlled the game. After competing well in the opening frame, it was rewarded with a goal by Josef Martinez, as Fox Soccer showed:Making matters worse for Jamaica, Rodolph Austinreceived a red card in the 24th minute. Here is a look at the challenge that ended his day, courtesy of Fox Soccer:The booking made history at theCopa America, per the tournament's official Twitter account:The Venezuelans finished the half with a 5-4 shot advantage and 55 percent of the possession. The team looked confident on the ball and was able to thread together consecutive passes with ease, which was not expected because of Jamaica's team speed. The second half started slow for both teams, as neither was able to hold much possession in the attacking third of the field.Venezuela, playing with an extra man, appeared content to pass the ball around to hold on to its lead. Most of the Venezuelan passes were short, low-risk plays that could not lead to much offense, but more importantly, they prevented Jamaica from creating any counterattacking opportunities. The game opened up later on, as Venezuela created a golden chance off a corner in the 70th minute, but Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake made a great save on the goal line before Venezuela booted the rebound over the net, courtesy of Fox Soccer:Jamaica put together several chances to equalize in the last 15 minutes of play. The first came from a free kick just outside the box in the 76th minute, but Giles Barnes' shot sailed high. The team had a corner about five minutes later, but Venezuelan goalie Dani Hernandez stonedAdrian Mariappa's header. The 1-0 victory gave Venezuela hope that it can pull off an upset and advance past the group stage. If they can force a draw in their next two matches, the Venezuelans will have a chance to sneak into the next round.Jamaica, on the other hand, is in trouble. It has to get at least four points between its next two fixtures against Mexico and Uruguay to have a viable chance of advancing, which will be a tough task against two of the best teams in the tournament.Mexico def. Uruguay, 3-1In easily the most entertaining game of the tournament thus far, Mexico came out on fire amid pitch temperatures that reached 115 degreesFahrenheit at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, perCopa America on Twitter. The Mexicans were faster and more sharp with their passing through the first 20 minutes. They also got a break early with this own goal from Uruguay, courtesy of Fox Soccer:The goal was the fastest of its type in tournament history:Mexico created a few more chances, but Uruguay finally began to settle in slightly before the 30-minute mark. The team nearly got on the board, but El Tri goalkeeper AlfredoTalavera deniedEdinson Cavaniwith a great save. The red card was again a factor, as Matias Vecino was sent off right before halftime. Uruguay has a knack for playing with 10 men, though, per Reuters' Andrew Downie:Mexico finished the half with nearly 60 percent possession, as it utilized its speed to create mismatches in space. The lead was promising, per ESPN Stats & Info:Uruguay looked better in the second half, as Cavani was able to find some space on the wings to force some corners. The tide started to turn toward Uruguay when it finally caught the break it needed.Andres Guardado picked up his second yellow card in the 73rd minute, evening the match at 10 players apiece for each team. Uruguay wasted no time exploiting this, as Diego Godin scored a minute later to equalize, courtesy of Fox Soccer:Mexico responded in a huge way. Roughly 10 minutes later, veteran center back Rafa Marquez scored on a beautiful feed to send the pro-Mexican crowd into hysteria. Take a look at this great pass and finish, courtesy of Fox Soccer:Uruguay pushed play near Mexico's goal, but it was unable to retie the game. Hector Herrera was able to capitalize on Uruguay's aggressiveness with a goal in stoppage time to ice the match.Mexico now leads the group and looks poised to advance out of Group C. The team looks motivated and dangerous with the ball. If they can avoid seeing red, the Mexicans are a legitimate threat to win the tournament.El Tri outplayed Uruguay for most of the night, but La Celestehad a tremendous opportunity to walk away with a point. Luis Suarez did not play, so the team is not at full strength. Should he return, Uruguay still looks like a strong bet to advance.Rankings are courtesy of FIFA.com.Statistics are courtesy of CA2016.com.
