AYC qualifier: Flying Eagles battle South Africa

Published by Tribune on Fri, 21 Sep 2012

FLYING Eagles coach, John Obuh is optimistic his team will come out with a good result in today's qualifying match for the African Youth Championship (AYC) against South Africa's Amajita. The two sides will file onto the pitch later this evening in South Africa in a first leg final round for a place at the African youth tourney. The match which is billed for Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit, which is less than two hours by road from Johannesburg is scheduled to kick off at 6.30 pm Nigerian time. The Nigerians will, in addition to fighting for the a ticket to the AYC, seek a revenge against the South Africans who beat them 1-0 when they clashed in an invitational tourney hosted by the South Africans early this year.Obuh felt his team was robbed in that encounter and has vowed to pay the South Africans back in their own coins this evening.''I have confidence in my team. We are going to pick a good result in this first leg tie so that by the time they (South Africans) come for the return leg, we will just finish the job','' said coach Obuh.Meanwhile, Amajita coach, Solly Luvhengo says he is confident ahead of the AYC qualifier, but says it will be embarrassing to play in a home stadium 'full of Nigerians'.He has, therefore, appealed to South Africans to come out enmasse to support the team."I am making a plea to the fans to come in big numbers to support the youngsters because it would be very embarrassing to play at home in a stadium full of Nigerians."The second leg of the encounter holds on October 13 at the Kwara Sports Complex, Ilorin
