N5,000: NBA to challenge policy in court, calls for sack of Sanusi

Published by Tribune on Fri, 21 Sep 2012

With the insistence of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to continue with its proposed introduction of the N5,000 note, the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), on Thursday, threatened to challenge the policy in court. The Bar, in the same vein, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to sack the CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and other top management staff of the apex bank over their insistence on the issue. The president of the association, Okey Wali, who said this in Abuja at the NBA leaders' summit stated that, "since all indices show that Nigerians do not want the N5,000 note even if the leadership of the CBN is right, we believe that they are bound by the wishes of the people or they should take the honourable part of resignation rather than exhibiting such unbridled high level of arrogance and rudeness."For all the faults that may be identifiable in President Goodluck Jonathan, arrogance cannot be said to be one of his attributes. The NBA is, therefore, amazed that this high level of megalomania is going on under his watch. We will, therefore, call on the the president to please do the needful, initiate the process of the removal from office of the leadership of the CBN. On our part, we will keep our promise to go to court to challenge the implementation of the policy should the leadership fail to resign.'In his paper entitled: Professional Challenges of the Nigeria Bar Association in the 21st Century, Chief Afe Babalola, called for the appointment of judges from the rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria to ensure that only the most qualified, experienced and knowledgable practitioners of law are appointed to the bench.
