FOR Nigeria to be free from corruption and achieve its development goals, there is need for Internal Auditors to be up to speed in the discharge of their duties.This were the word of experts at the ongoing 4-day public sector Internal Auditors' conference organized by the Institute for Public Sector Studies in Lagos yesterday. The conference is themed, 'Internal Auditors: Enforcing Accountability Obligations in the Public Service.'According to the Managing Consultant, Turning Point Consulting, Mr. Patrick Obilo Orji, the Nigerian environment is very risky for internal auditors to operate in, based on its peculiar situation with corruption and the political activities that have handicapped operators in their organizations.Orji stated that auditors are meant to be the change agents in their respective domain but the political situation and operating tendencies have made them to be relegated to the background'They are suppose to guide and drive the transformation agenda to enable the president perform and meet up with the commitment of the nation's vision 2020.'The audit expert noted that the reason multinational and development agencies were getting interested in the internal audit function was because of it ability to serve as a vehicle for poverty eradication, which comes about when accountability becomes the hallmark of governance, and systems and processes run efficiently.
