House Investigates Petition Against Aliyu

Published by Guardian on Sun, 23 Sep 2012

THE Niger State House of Assembly has begun the process of probing Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu over a petition on gross mismanagement of state finances brought before the House by a group calling itself 'concerned citizen of the state.'The House has referred the matter to its Committee on Public Petitions, Ethics and Privileges for proper investigations. At its sitting on Thursday, the House mandated the Committee, headed by Mohammed Nazeer Abdullahi, to investigate the petition and submit recommendations within two weeks. The Clerk of the Assembly, Abdullahi Kagara, presented the petition to the House at its plenary on resumption from a four-week recess, explaining that the petition was filed while the members were away. The group, among other things, demand that the House immediately begin the process of impeaching the governor to pave way for genuine development in the state; otherwise, it (House) would be held accountable for misappropriation of state funds. The petition, signed by Alhaji Mohammed Moude Usman, and Mohammed Awaisu Giwa Wana, expresses dismay over conduct of the legislature before the executive arm and accuses members of conniving with the executive in the alleged misappropriation of state funds. It urges the House to clear its name, saying people have been made to believe that the House has been compromised and is a mere rubber stamp of the executive; hence its silence on perceived 'misappropriation' of state funds.
