Kogi: Community decries neglect of collapsed bridge

Published by Tribune on Mon, 24 Sep 2012

THE people of Agojeju Odo in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State have called on the state governor, Captain Idris Wada, to expedite action on the road project linking the village with the neighboring Benue State as the only bridge in the area has collapsed due to torrential rainfall recorded in the past few weeks. The spokesperson for Udaba Omala Development Association, Honourable Adamu Ibrahim, made the call at Agojeju Odo while briefing Community News on the state of the road which was awarded for construction by the immediate past administration. He said the call became necessary as the people of the village and its environs who were mainly farmers were cut off from their farms and other villages, thus posing a grave danger to the security of lives and property.Ibrahim noted that the past administration of Alhaji Ibrahim Idris had awarded the construction of the road but could not complete it before the end of his tenure, stressing that the incumbent should not abandon the road as it is a gateway to Benue State and other parts of the country.According to him, the road which services the people of Idrisu, Bagaji Okpotala; Agojeju and Ajokpachi Odo who are more than 20,000, inhabitants has created transportation and communication problem for the people. He added that the people who are producing large quantity of cassava, yam ,maize and other edible crops for onward transportation to the other parts of the state, have been experiencing economic quagmire since their products have remained in the farm."Look at our people now that students are returning to school with attendant payment of school fees . Without road to transport the farm produce to markets, where will they get money to pay the school fees'' He bemoaned. The group urged the House of Assembly member representing the area, Honourable Aliyu Akuh, to use his position to ensure that the contractor handling the road project returned to site.He added that as a remedial measure, the Ministry of Works should repair the affected bridge which has become a nightmare for the people.
