Ogwashi-Uku: Youths set for positive change

Published by Tribune on Mon, 24 Sep 2012

A new dawn has set in for Ogwashi-uku in Delta State as youths in the community have resolved to restore the lost glory of the colonial town where selfless service and commitement to development of the area would be on the front burner. At a workshop organised by the youth themselves recently to appraise ills militating against development in the town and profer solutions for the way forward, the youths from different quarters were unanimous that enough was enough to ills that beset the people and called for more unity to fight all social vices amongst them. They were upset that the dreams of the founding fathers of the community which placed education, spirit of communal effort and integration appeared to have died and called on all and sundry, including their leaders, to forge ahead and reawaken such dreams in order for the community to take its rightful position amongst communities in the state.Addressing the delegates to the workshop, President General of the youths, Comrade Michael Utulu, charged them to engage in meaningful ventures rather than stealing, cultism and other criminal tendencies which hitheto had potrayed the community in bad light.Comrade Utulu recalled the hey days of Ogwashi-uku which gave birth as a colonial local government headquarters and how it had receded in development, adding that by the resolution of the youths, 'Ogwashi-uku must move foward'.The Rector of Delta State Polytechnic in the community, Dr (Mrs) Edna Mogekwu, in her remark, admonished the youths to be of positive change by embarking on self help programmes such as environmental sanitation. She charged them also to be youths of reconciliation by ensuring that they all speak in one voice.Dr. Mogekwu encouraged the youths to be properly armed with sound education in order to be relevant in the society.Astute broadcaster Barbara Okoruwa, tickled the youths to shun the old parts and embrace the new order where there is dignity in labour, adding 'If we form a forbiddable team, there is nothing we can't achieve'.Okoruwa who represented 'Ndi ' Anioma, Ogwashi-uku cultural organisation and Justog, expressed hope for a new Ogwashi-Uku.Earlier, initiator of Ogwashi-uku Cultural Carnival, Mrs Anthiona Oguah, said apart from its cultural values, the organisers had decided to use the platform to help students preparing for their senior school certificate examination as well as farmers in the community to boost their production.
