London Repton boxers dazzle in Lagos

Published by Tribune on Tue, 25 Sep 2012

COORDINATOR, Lagos State Boxing Hall of Fame, Mr Wale Edun, has expressed satisfaction with the success so far recorded in the organisation of the annual international friendly between Lagos and Repton Boxing Club of London. He made this known while speaking at the weekend during the final of the third international bout held at the National Stadium, Lagos."I am impressed with the performance of our boys, they did their best. This a good platform for them to be exposed to modern boxing and this would also encourage other aspiring boxers to embrace the game. We are making progress, to sustain this programme for three years I think is a laudable achievement. This is a developmental programme and we already have our own gymnasium.I believe that our boxers would surely improve with what they have gained so far from this programme. We have added a new dimension to grassroots sports development by bringing foreign boxers to Nigeria and we also want to see a situation where our boxers too will go there to compete," said Edun.Meanwhile, it was a bad day for the host last Saturday who had in the first leg won four of the six bouts decided at Eko Hotel and Suites, as the visitors this time won four of the five bouts decided.Sikiru Fatai in the first bout of the day lost to Ghanaian-born Ohara Davies in the 62kg class. Fatai had earlier been awarded the bout before the decision was upturned by the judges in favour of the Repton lad.Rilwan Oladosu, gave Lagos fans cause to rejoice as he gained an unanimous victory over Tommy Tear in the 64kg before Saheed Lawal lost to Karol Ozimkowski in the 69kg. Nigerian-born Ben Falaja fighting before his dad at the ringside, Mr Abayomi Falaja defeated Ganiu Hammed also in a 69kg bout. Another Nigerian-born boxer, Umar Sadiq taught Wasiu Balogun some boxing lesson forcing the referee to stop the near one-sided contest in Round Two.
