Classy, regal Iyabo

Published by Guardian on Tue, 25 Sep 2012

Princess Iyabo Olajubu-Afolabi is not your wannabe fashion freak. She is a singer and songwriter. Daughter of the late regent of Ikogosi, Princess Bunmi Olajubu, she is a public administration graduate of Bayero University, Kano. Recently, she released a three-track compilation that includes Aye le, Nitori and Glorify Him into the local music market. Iyabo, who has allergy for those dresses that are revealing, shares her first moment with GREGORY AUSTIN NWAKUNOR. What's the first thing that inspires you ' dressing, whatever'Hmmmh!' it is God.What's the first item you put in your bag' My make-up kit.And your first consideration when you want to chose what to wear'Decency and fitting. My fashion style is about being my person. As somebody who grew up in a Christian home, I cannot just dress anyhow. I believe so much in God. Despite the fact that we are from the royalty, we have a Christian upbringing. My grandfather, as a king, was a deacon in the Baptist Church. He remains the only king in that land that ended up marrying one wife because of his strong Christian background. I grew up in the home of a mother who was very fabulous in her dressing. My mother was a fashion freak. Even when I was small, she would tell me the make of a shoe and the leather that went into making it ' leopard or ostrich. She was a woman of class. You shouldn't expect less from me. She taught me how to dress well. I love anything that brings me out very well. I love that fabric that gives me fashion confidence. Anywhere I go, I must be admired. I love African prints, trousers or anything that is not body revealing. We were brought up to be modest in our dressing. What's your first colour choice'Purple. It signifies royalty. What's your first choice perfume'Tresor by LancmeWhat's your first choice of food'Rice and peppered stew with fish and pomo. What's the first thing that attracts and turns you off in people'Truthfulness attracts me first while dishonesty turns me off.Which country is your first choice for relaxation'Germany. I like Berlin because of its calm atmosphere. When was your first journey outside the country'It was 1998.What was your first disappointment and how did you take it'Its details are private and can't be disclosed, but anyway, I handled it with maturity. What was the first gift you received as an adult'It was a designer's shoe and bag given to me by my late mom. It was a Chanel brand and I still keep it to date. What's your first car'Peugeot 406. When did you sign your first contract'I'm not yet signed to a record label. But whenthat is done, I'll keep you informed. What's your first major show'It was when I had to perform as a kid in a Baptist church. How was your first encounter with a producer'The encounter was really fun filled and interesting as I already had ideas on song production. I was able to tell the producer what I wanted and he was amazedat my experience. What's the title of your first single'Aye le. Which song is the first you have written'Cheer up. I wrote the song at 16.
