Northern Xtian elders protest marginalisation

Published by Tribune on Wed, 26 Sep 2012

Christian elders from the 19 northern states and Abuja met in Kaduna on Tuesday under the aegis of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and accused the federal authorities of marginalising them. They specifically lamented that they were poorly represented in the Northern States' Committee on Reconciliation, Healing and Security. The Christian elders said in a communique issued at the end of their meeting and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Sunday Oibe, that only 11 Christians were appointed into the 41-man committee. They, therefore, argued that without equitable representation, the committee's findings and recommendations might not be acceptable to all the stakeholders. They reviewed the activities of the Boko Haram sect and commended the national leadership of CAN for efforts made so far to stem the sect's activities, while urging Christians to remain in their places of residence and worship in the region despite the intimidating and deadly posture of the terrorists.'The meeting noted with displeasure the lopsided composition of the Northern States' Committee on Reconciliation, Healing and Security in which Christians are only 11 out of the 41- man committee.'We, therefore, call that if the committee is meant for the purpose which we are being made to believe, then there should be an equitable representation so that its findings and recommendations will be accepted to all concerned.'We commend the CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritseajafor, for the personal and corporate steps taken so far to curb the menace of Boko Haram in the country. 'Let it be clearly emphasised that the church in the North will continue to march on.
